Alex mausshardt

Alex is interested in the social drivers of community-based adaptation. His thesis is focused on documenting the unique challenges that rural, coastal communities face while adapting to sea level rise and erosion through the lens of climate justice. Prior to joining the Santana lab, he worked as an Outreach and Engagement Specialist for the Montana Climate Office, and received his B.S. in Physics from Montana State University.

Matt Milward

Matt is an environmental sociologist by training with a background in visual ethnography and environmental communication. His past research explored media representations of environmental hazards, cases of rural environmental injustice, and indigenous environmental artwork as an effort to preserve culture. Currently, his focus is on understanding the psychosocial dimensions underpinning environmental self-efficacy, aiming to identify communication strategies that build community and empower individuals to advocate for themselves in the face of climate change risks.

Sydney sappenfield

Sydney is a masters student in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. Her research focuses on adaptive and collaborative management of freshwater resources in response to climate change. Her thesis will explore the potential for collaborative management practices at the intersection of forest fire, watersheds, and salmon habitat. Her past work has included backcountry guiding, conservation and restoration efforts along sections of the Colorado River, and economic impact and marketing effectiveness research for the Utah Office of Tourism. In her free time she enjoys backcountry skiing, mountain biking, and backpacking.
